Chocolate and Peanut Butter....

Need I say anything more?

For some reason yesterday I started thinking about desserts or sweets, or whatever you want to call 'em.

Must have been guidance from above, because when I got home from work my better half said, "I'd like some chocolate chip peanut butter cookies this weekend."

So, the Syracuse-Nova Game isn't on until 9 pm, I got plenty of time to do it.

Alrighty, my mission today was to find a recipe that was within my talents as a baker (novice) and would taste really good. I think I did it.

Whipped some butter and added peanut butter-
Added some eggs and sugar (brown and white), and the dry stuff ( baking soda, baking powder, salt and flour)...  Then a couple of eggs (Thanks Chickens!), and the chips, Hersheys Chocolate Chips.
Looked like this-

Buns and Chops

For supper on Thursday night I made Pork Chops and some Parker House Rolls on the side.

Well, maybe the side was the pork chops, which isn't to underestimate the importance of pork.  It's just that I'm a breadhead from way back, possibly infancy.  I could subsist on fresh homemade bread and a slice of sharp cheddar, 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.  Unfortunately my better half likes a little more variety on the menu, hence the addition of pork chops, some rice and steamed veggies.

Parker House rolls have quite a history. The original recipe dates from the 1800's from the Parker House Hotel in Boston.  Fannie Farmer published the recipe in 1896.
How cool is that? Rolls with a pedigree.

Here's the main course....

Tough Ticket-

Real tough ticket......

I just wish it was mine! It's ZZ's ticket. I tried to talk her into giving it to me,but it didn't work.

Oh well, the couch will do just fine, along with some wings and pizza.

9PM-Cuse vs. Villanova, a sellout and the biggest crowd ever at the Dome. Cool, very cool.
Go Cuse!

Thoughts and Prayers.....

There are days when you think you've got problems and the world is against you. Then you realize your problems are more imaginary than real and pale in comparison to real problems that real people have.

One of our own (Tupper Lake) kids serving in Afghanistan was seriously wounded today. Bergan (Arsenault) Flannigan was wounded in an explosion while performing a roadside check on foot.
Bergan will be transported to Germany soon, from there she will go to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC.

Below is a link from the Wall St. Journal that details her and her husbands story and others that are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

One of the coolest kids I ever taught or knew, she's one tough cookie.

Great kid from a great family, serving her country, doing what she loves.

Thoughts and Prayers to Amy, Bill, Beth ,Brooke, Berg & Thomas.

Berg, we love you, see ya soon!

Sweeet....

Sweet Potato Fries or is it Frys? Or Potatoe????

It's the night before payday, and you really don't want to go out in the cold and go to the store to buy for one meal when you know there'll be a weekly grocery shopping trip over the weekend.

So it's look in the freezer- Ah, there's some ground chuck and some bagels- easy decision, make some cheeseburgers and have some frys.

So I went into the pantry and there's no taters.

Bummer! But, there were sweet potatoes! I peeled 'em...

The weekend...

Just getting around to posting the weekend's events. Went to Chaumont, NY and spent the weekend with our good friends Steve and Cathy on Chaumont Bay.  The purpose of the trip was simply to relax, cook (all Steve), and eat (all of us).

And eat we did....
Had some sliders....
You know why they call 'em sliders, right?
Good thing he didn't make 2 dozen......

No Knead Challah

Another fine recipe from the folks at Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day.  This came via The Ivory Hut.
I've been baking the boule for well over a month now, a couple of times a week and it's outstanding.

The Boule.

When I ran across the recipe for Challah, I knew I'd have to make it. Different ingredients, but similar, easy preparation.  I'd previously made a kneaded version, but the fact that this is no-knead made a must-do. You see the 5 minute part of Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day is the prep. You simply mix your ingredients in a large bowl, add the flour, stir and let it rise until doubled. At that point you can bake the bread or refrigerate the dough until ready to bake.

Another challenge.....

in the spirit of last weeks request to find lighter, healthier foods.

We'll call this one the Keough Challenge.  I was challenged to find some tasty vegetarian recipes.

So, here I am, a self-professed meatatarian, on the hunt for recipes I once thought fit for herbivores only, like giraffes and such.

Yup, the Dark Side was calling.

Kitchen gadgets...

French Frys are one of the quintessential American sides.  They complement many dishes, like burgers and dogs and hot roast beef sandwiches and, well, you get idea.

They are a main ingredient in poutine, which consists of frys, gravy and melted cheese.
Poutine = Serious comfort food.

I've got a preference for homemade frys over frozen for obvious reasons.  It takes a little more effort with the prep, but there's nothing like salted  frys right out of the oil.

A month or so ago I was making frys when my mother mentioned to me she had a fry cutter in
one of her cupboards.  Would I like it? Silly question, of course I'd like it.  Any tool to expedite the process is welcomed.

So, she brought it over, here it is.
Has to be close to 50 years old.

Bagels

If you haven't already figured it out, I work with a great bunch of folks, and we all appreciate the finer things in life, like food.
So after supper last night I decided to make some bagels to bring in for Friday morning-

Friday's always good, Friday with some breakfast snacks makes it all the better.

Here's what you need.

Some yeast- Yeast is good, my favorite micro-organism....
Go ahead, say micro-organism fast 5 times, I dare ya!

Some flour- yup buy it in bulk, never have to run out and grab a 5 lb. bag.

Light

Cooking?

So I'm at work this morning and believe it or not, we were having another send-off, with all sorts of goodies. ( Let me preface this by saying I made bagels last night and had already consumed two of them prior to this.)

So I'm chowing on a slice of  Jane's breakfast pie, which was like a quiche with bacon and sausage and my god it was good- when I received a complaint about the blog , well not so much a complaint, more like a request......

Super Snacks!

So the Super Bowl is this Sunday. Colts vs. the Saints.  Am I excited about the game???
Well, yeah.  We're pulling for the Saints. The Big Easy deserves it. But I'll be honest with you loyal readers, I'm just as excited about having an excuse to try out a few (well, maybe more than a few) recipes I've found for the game.  There's a zillion food blogs out there, with a zillion great recipes, but I've found a few that I think, at first glance, will be the chosen ones.

Let's go with Tupper's Top 5 for Super Sunday 2010!

'Cuse vs. Providence

@ 7PM.

21-1 Syracuse take on 12-9 Providence. So you're probably thinking, ought to be a blowout, huh?

On paper it is, but the 'Cuse has gotten off to wicked slow starts their last two games. They were down 14-0 to Georgetown and the following game trailed Marquette by up to 18 points, before turning on the jets.

I'd hope they reverse that trend tonight and put the Friars away early.

We'll see, Go 'Cuse!
